What I do...

My research is carried out within the field of historical geography and landscape history. My dissertation from 1998 deals with field systems during the early-modern period (1550-1750) in western Sweden i.e. the provinces Västergötland, Dalsland and Värmland by Lake Vänern. The period 1550-1750 is not very well studied as far as the landscape is concerned. The focus of geographers in Sweden has been on the earlier period. Read an English summary of the dissertation. I have also co-edited a book on field systems and sustainable agriculture (Jansson & Mårald (red.) 2005).

I have been doing minor studies of medieval deserted farms in western Sweden. These studies include thorough examinations of large-scale maps and field investigations. I have conducted some investigations in connection with environmental impact assessments of various types, that include historical studies and GIS.

I have a strong interest in historical and contemporary cartography, see blog on geography and cartography (Swedish). Among the sources for my study are large-scale cadastral maps which provide rich information on the management of the landscape in the 17th and the18th centuries. I have previously worked with small-scale maps from the19th and 20th C.

I am currently teaching historical geography cartography and GIS on various levels at the department of Human geography. Reading and writing are two things that are central in scientific studies, writing reviews combines these two activities well. I am in charge of reviews at Bebyggelsehistorisk tidskrift. A journal that deals with topics such as settlement history, architecture, landscape, archaeology, agrarian history etc. If you have read a book within the broad field of settlement history and want to write a review please feel free to send me an e-mail. Landscape, farmers and their actions 1900-2005 – Between agriculture and biodiversity

A project that deals with the landscape changes and farmers actions during the last 100 years with special relevance to the concept biological diversity. The project will run during 2006 through to 2008. For more information see: webpage in Swedish.

An atlas on agriculture and forestry in Sweden 1900-2000

This is a project in association with the Swedish national atlas and Royal academy of agriculture and forestry. The aim of the project is to create an overview of land-use changes and changes in production in Sweden. The work will include a number of researchers within different fields in order to understand and explain the many changes that occurred during the last century. Many different maps covering topics such as population, settlement, climate, land-cover, arable production, forestry etc. will be created for the project. The project starts in 2006. The atlas will be published in both Swedish and English. See a Swedish webpage on the project. In addition to the atlas an anthology on agriculture and forestry will be written by different scholars.

I have an ongoing project on commons in Sweden, from the medieval period to the present, a project that incorporates written sources such as maps and legal documents. The historical geography of the commons is the focal point. The discussion is concentrated around the questions of how the commons were managed, the colonisation of the commons and their history. The theoretical base is the discussion of common pool resources (CPR), Actor network theory (ANT) and the discussion of power and institutions in geography.

There are different types of commons. The pasture or forest of a village, the commons of a parish or commons belonging to a group of parishes called härad (hundred). The regional commons belonging to the hundred (härad) were transferred to the crown during the 17th century. This was however a process that had been going on from the Middle Ages. During this period the commons were managed by the authorities and the local Society was more or less cut off from its previous forests and pasture grounds. In the 20th century the farmers in Sweden once again gained control of the commons, when the political doctrine said that the private ownership was superior to that of state owned lands.
